The oval mirror is surrounded by a frame of generous dimensions and proportions,
Louis XVI furniture defines itself in opposition to the Louis XV style: it rejects the rock forms of the Louis XV style and returns to the rigor of geometric shapes inspired, among other things, by the discovery of vestiges of antiquity in Herculaneum and Pompeii (two towns near Naples engulfed by the volcanic eruption of Vesuvius). The structure of the furniture is highlighted by rectilinear and rigorous shapes such as the rectangle, the square, the round and the oval, borrowed from neoclassical architecture. The base of the furniture takes up the elements of the antique style with in particular the fluted foot or the square column.
The ornamental elements are minimalist: symmetrical in shape, they find their inspiration in plant nature and ancient themes. Among the most classic elements are the ribbon bow, the festoon and the drapery. The gilding is affixed with small touches in strips or in the corners (where they serve to reinforce the weak points of the furniture).
