About

The Shellman oyster shell mirrors are among the most popular from shell artists Mikael and Buster. They manage to present edgy roughness and pure elegance at the same time. At first glance it may look beige only, but in an oyster shell you will find shades of light and dark purple, green, pink, blue, black, grey, red… And turned upside down, white. Following the tradition of late Sydney-based shell artist Paul Bruce and Dutch shell artist Niels van Alphen, the third Shellman generation is now based in south Sweden. In truth, the current Shellman is two shell men. Mikael Hjärtsjö and his son Buster left successful careers in advertising and at Apple respectively to create unique high-quality mirror frames and sculptures, covered with treasures from sea and beach. Each work – free form or strictly patterned – is a true conversation piece in its own right, following Shellman’s meticulous ambitions: good enough is not enough! Shell art by Shellman standards is a painstaking yet rewardingly slow process that has rendered clients in the US, Spain, commission work to Sicilian palazzos and of course, Sweden. The oyster shells that go into this mirror frame has been carefully hand-picked by divers on the Swedish west coast. The oyster itself has been eaten by guests at Shellman’s local bistro. The shells are then collected and hand-washed every Monday morning by Mikael and Buster. You’re looking at sustainable re-usage as elegant and rough as it can be.
