About the Item

A Pair of mirrors, from Designs in Thomas Chippendale's 'Director' Constructed in carved gilded softwood, of asymmetrical addorsed form, the mirror plates housed within complex Rococo carving, incorporating 'S' & 'C' scrolls, foliage, and surmounted by Ho Ho birds, the design informed by Chippendale's Plate numbers 168, 169, 177 and 178. Circa 1850 Dimensions: H: 70 in / 177 cm W: 35.5 in / 90 cm Thomas Chippendale the Elder (1718-1779) Yorkshire born, a highly skilled cabinet maker and designer, published in 1754 his 'Gentleman & Cabinet Maker's Director', a volume of instantly recognisable and idiosyncratic designs, that was reprinted time and again, serving as an essential manual for cabinet makers the length and breadth of England. Working from 60-62 St Martins Lane, London his output is regarded as the ne plus ultra of 18th century English cabinet making. His company furnished inter alia, Harewood House and Nostell Priory. The Ho Ho bird is a mythical creature, whose origins in China go back some eight millenia, appearing on pottery and jade work, the Ho Ho bird traditionally only resides in households with honour, propriety and happiness.
