Pair of French Tramp Art Mirrors with Geometric Carved Frames, circa 1900

About the Item

This pair of French Tramp Art mirrors, dating to circa 1900, offers a striking example of the genre’s intricately layered and hand-carved aesthetic. Each frame is built from repeated geometric forms—zigzags, notches, diamonds—cut and stacked in shallow relief to create bold, architectural depth. The rhythmic carving pattern and careful symmetry across both mirrors reflect the folk-art origins of Tramp Art, while also exhibiting the refined precision often associated with Continental examples of the style. Executed in dark-stained wood with a rich reddish-brown tone, the frames display an interlocking pattern that accentuates the rectangular silhouette. While each mirror is nearly identical, subtle variations in carving and surface tone reinforce their handmade quality. The mirror plates are clear and reflective, set deep within the highly textured surrounds. Measuring 27 inches wide by 33 inches high, these mirrors have a strong wall presence whether hung side by side or placed separately. They are especially well suited to interiors with layered textures—rustic, bohemian, or folk-inspired—and would add depth and craftsmanship to an entryway, hallway, or living space.

Tramp Art Rustic Wall Mirror Hand Carved, Austria, circa 1870
Located in Lichtenberg, AT
Unusual rustic Tramp Art wall mirror from the late 19th century around 1870 in Austria. Hand carved out of fine basswood, the wide frame shows a gorgeous chip carved design with spectacular made corners. The very dark brown stained surface shows a shellac finishing and confers this antique mirror a great appearance. The mirror glass has been renewed during the restoration process and a hand forged ring on the backside makes wall mounting easy. A truly unique Tramp Art masterpiece in our very popular selection of rustic wall mirrors.
