Period French Regence Gilt and Carved Wood Frame/ Mirror

About the Item

This fine frame from the French Regence period 1715 to 1723 to perhaps 50 years after that exact date is made completely of carved wood that has been gessoed and beautifully water gilded. Originally a frame and then sometime in the late 19th to early 20th century it was given an additional top crest turning it into a mirror. If you look at the last two photos one can see that the newer upper section while still carved in wood is not as old and that at that time new backboards the same color containing the mirror plate as the additional top crest was placed on the frame that has an older and more oxidized color visible. The gilding was probably touched up then but the lower frame retains much of its old gold and the touch-up and top crest can be seen to have been done creating a harmonizing color to compliment the original gilding.
