Piedmont, Louis XVI Mirror with selvage Carved and gilded wood, 164 x 104 cm Light, 90 x 70 cm The Louis XVI mirror under consideration, clearly manufactured in Piedmont, was made of carved and gilded wood and has a pierced cyma decorated with scroll friezes on the top. The Louis XVI style in furniture predates by a few years the reign of Louis XVI (1774-1793), from whom it takes its name, and is characterized by the renunciation of rounded, extroverted forms in favor of a straight, simpler, sober, and geometric line inspired by Greco-Roman classicism. Even today, Louis XVI furniture is synonymous with elegance and prestige. The furnishings that date from this era, therefore, follow a simple yet elegant and refined taste, and are meticulously detailed with great precision, as we can also see in this mirror. The technical perfection of their execution is so high that it is almost impossible to create copies, which is why it is very rare for Louis XVI frames and furniture to be forged. The Louis XVI style was considered the golden age of French furniture, where demand from the aristocracy was high and frequent. The item is in good condition
