Qing Dynasty Red Lacquered Mirror, Hardwood Frame with Gilt Carvings

About the Item

A red lacquered and gilt wood mirror from the Chinese Qing Dynasty, late 19th century to early 20th century. Measuring 79 cm tall and 50 cm wide, this mirror is a striking antique with great character. While not originally intended as a mirror, the frame was most likely repurposed from a decorative window panel. The rectangular hardwood frame is finished in striking imperial red lacquer, its vibrant hue softened by the patina of time. Surrounding the double frame are intricately hand-carved wooden motifs, gilded to enhance their fine details and serve as both decoration and structural elements, which beautifully hold each frame together. At the top, a decorative cartouche showcases a central gilt plum blossom—a symbol of resilience and renewal—set against a rich cinnabar red background. This is flanked by two finely carved giltwood panels featuring symbolic patterns, exemplifying the remarkable craftsmanship and cultural importance of Qing-era woodwork. At over 120 years old, this piece bears the marks of its history. Two carved embellishments from the lower corners have been lost over time, and the delicate red lacquer finish shows areas of wear, though it retains much of its original vibrancy. The gilding has faded, leaving highlights that accentuate the intricate carving. Despite these signs of age, the mirror holds its beauty, evoking a sense of opulent nostalgia—an aesthetic perfectly suited to a setting like the chinoiserie dream that is Tony Duquette’s home.

Vallauris Ceramic Poker Ashtray Set, Green Glazed with Gilt, France, 1960s
By Vallauris
Located in Glasgow, GB
This rare set of four handcrafted ceramic ashtrays by Vallauris is a striking example of mid-century French design, playfully inspired by the world of poker. Each ashtray is uniquely shaped to represent a card suit—spade, club, diamond, and ace—creating a cohesive yet distinctive collection. The deep malachite-green glaze lends a rich, almost jewel-like quality to the pieces, further accentuated by the bold gold gilt borders that highlight the shape of each piece. Housed in their original faux lizard-skin presentation box, these ashtrays have been well preserved. The glaze remains glossy and deep, with no apparent signs of ash residue, suggesting they were rarely, if ever, used for their intended purpose. The gold detailing exhibits some minor surface wear, but it retains its brightness, adding to the vintage charm. Measuring approximately 8 cm in length and width, with a height of 3 cm, each piece is perfectly sized for tabletop display. While originally designed as ashtrays, their sculptural forms and opulent finish make them equally suited for use as decorative objects or small trinket dishes...
