Rare 17th Century Gold Leaf Wood and Mercury Mirror, circa 1600

About the Item

This rare museum-quality gilded carved oak mirror originated from France. The piece was crafted in the 17th Century. The exceptional piece of decoration boasts a high-quality Louis XIV period framing with silver leaf gilding in "a la Berain" carved decor. The silver leaf has worn through to expose the reddish-brown "bole," or gilder's clay. The mirror still has its original mercury insert. This mirror would make a gorgeous addition to any dressing room or living room as a decorative statement. Please remember that this mirror is approximately 400 years old but in good condition considering its age. It is an original mercury mirror with tarnishing, a missing gesso on the wood edges, and a crack in gesso on two corner edges. Check all the close-ups. Dimensions: 21.63 in high (55 cm) x 18.13 in wide (46 cm) x 2.38 in deep (6 cm). Note: During the 17th Century, the frames had a specific assembly in the corners. The wooden elements are not glued but shaped with a "key" assembly. This technique is called a "Key Frame". Those keys are usually in oak wood and are positioned perpendicular to the cutting of the sides. The back of these mirrors usually has raw and unfinished wood panels, and occasional traces of non-mechanical tools are visible. The patina must be natural and is named "hare dress," it is usually dark brown or beige and is not uniform.
