Large Regency Giltwood Oval Wall Mirror with Églomisé Border Circa 1790
About the Item
A large oval wall mirror of the George III – early Regency period, in elegant giltwood frame with Églomisé (reverse-painted glass) border,
English, circa 1790.
Why we like it
A wonderfully decorative mirror of rare large proportions, the carving and gilding is of exquisite quality.
The églomisé decoration to the border was refreshed and the plate is an early 20th century replacement.
Design
The elegant design of the frame of this mirror was informed by the elements from the Classical Antiquity, rediscovered by the gentlemen-artists such as the Scottish architect Robert Adam (1728–1792), on their travels and studies in Italy, where they sought inspiration for the new forms and styles. Robert Adam is considered the mist influential figure in British Neoclassicism. This elliptical shape was often incorporated in his interior designs, rooms layouts and architectural ornaments.
