About the Item
This is a charming late 18th century neoclassical marriage mirror. This petit trumeau retains its original painted, gilt surface and mirror and has acquired a wonderful deep natural patina.
Marriage mirrors were given as wedding presents to brides and formed a part of their trousseau. Newly married couples could rarely afford their own home and moved frequently; small pieces of furniture, such as this mirror, were much easier to transport to a new location.
