About the Item
Charming small Louis XVI / Directoire period mirror, featuring a carved and gray-painted wooden frame, enhanced with gilt highlights highlighting the ornaments.
The frame is punctuated by fluted column uprights, typical of the neoclassical style of the late 18th century, and enhanced with gilded capitals. The upper frieze and corners feature finely carved decoration, enlivened by touches of patinated gold that contrast harmoniously with the original light gray hue.
The antique mercury glass is slightly pitted, testifying to the piece's authentic character.
The original back is made of antique planks.
This elegant mirror combines sobriety and refinement, perfectly representing the transition between the Louis XVI and Directoire styles. It will fit equally well in a classic interior as in a more contemporary setting.
The Louis XVI style, born in the 1770s, is distinguished by its measured elegance and neoclassical inspiration, marking a return to symmetry and rigor after the fantasies of Rococo. The forms are straight and balanced, adorned with refined decorations—garlands, pearls, ribbons, and fluted columns—often enhanced with gilding on light backgrounds in pearl gray or cream tones. Around 1795, the Directoire style continued this spirit while purifying it: the lines became more sober, the ornaments became rarer, and the references to Antiquity became more austere, already announcing the rigor of the Empire style. Together, these two styles embody the transition between the aristocratic refinement of the 18th century and the neoclassical simplicity of the 19th.
