Antique Italian Neoclassical Painted QUEEN Bed is a splendid expression of the classical style that dates back three thousand years! Even the French embraced the style during the reign of Louis XVI, but in reality it never really went out of fashion. This example, with rectilinear headboard, rails and centermost portion of the footboard, is softened into the room with the introduction of radiused curves a the lower portion of the footboard's sides to connect to the rails. 19th Century French Louis XVI Painted Bed with Caning is a remarkable work of the furniture maker's art! Sculpted from walnut, it features artistry exhibited from the crown of the headboard to the arbalette base of the footboard which happens to match the side rails. The gracefully arched headboard consists of complex hand-carved molding surrounding a Greek coin border all across the crown, centered with an exquisitely rendered wreath of roses tied together with flowing ribbon. Egg finials on foliate bases adorn the corners, underneath which are rosettes and bell flowers, with more rosettes on the corner of the caned panel. As should be the case, the footboard has received equal attentions of the sculptor, with a boldly molded framework in an ovoid shape centered with a laurel wreath tied with ribbon mounted atop the double caned panel. Triangular rosettes provide an accent, with square rosettes serving as end caps on each corner under which are more bell flowers. The original painted finish has achieved a lovely patina and a charming state of distress that only adds to the allure and desirability of this magnificent work of the cabinetmaker's art! This large and attractive architectural piece is known as a pulpit canopy. Before the advent of microphones and speakers, orators would often address assemblies from elevated platforms known as “wine glass pulpits”. These podiums featured domed roofs called abat-voix, sometimes known as sounding boards, that would project sound outwards. Our walnut wood pulpit canopy is a fine example of such a device. Hand-carved and hand-painted in Italy in the 1700’s, our abat-voix is roughly octagonal in shape. Each of the sides have edges with luxuriously thick step molding, alternating between stained and gilded wood. Each of the corner cornices are adorned with gilded flower carvings, although some are missing. The interior of the canopy features a gilded open sun with sinuous rays emanating all around. Each of the sides are adorned with foliate margents surrounded by scrolls, again with some losses. All the edges are bordered with a thin layer of gilding.
