Stunning Brass Sculptural Form Double Bed by Angelo Brotto, Esperia, 1970, Italy

About the Item

Beautifully crafted brass double bed by Italian artist Angelo Brotto. The headboard and foot rail feature a wonderful heavy brass sculptural form interlocking loop motif with incised detailing in excellent condition The two side rails are finished in gold color powder coat enamel and are also in very good condition. Angelo Brotto (1914 - 2002), was a Venetian designer and artist. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice in 1941. In the 1960s and 1970s, Brotto became known for his special lighting designs in collaboration with the Italian company Esperia, he won many international prizes. Quote from Esperia's catalogue: 'Esperia was founded in 1952 in Poggibonsi, Siena. At first Esperia produced lighting fixtures for the bath environment, but starting in the 1960s the firm branched out across the whole technical lighting sector, thanks to remarkable structural and productive growth. During this period Esperia also began a fertile, lasting relationship with Prof. Angelo Brotto. The historical period of reference is the late 1960s, when the artist began to explore the idea of making works that could act as a point of contact between furniture and lighting design and artistic compositions. The brass posts,, side rail brackets and rails which encase the sculptural elements exhibit some areas of spotting and tarnishing to the brass finish unfortunately this is how genuine and unrestored examples are nearly always found probably due to excessive polishing over the years wearing the brass plate on these elements. The main important sculptural motif elements however are in excellent order and overall the bed still has great visual appeal. Please ask for additional detail photos. This bed was originally designed to have an inset bespoke self-supporting box mattress frame which can be made to order. Matress dimensions: 67.32" wide X 77.16" long X 14.17" high or 171 cm wide x 196 cm long x 36 cm high.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Nice original condition overall, the important brass sculptural elements in the headboard & footrail are in excellent condition. brass posts,corner brackets & brass cross rails which encase the sculptural elements have areas of spotting to the brass.
