Hand Carved Wood Mermaid 4 Drawer Commode or Chest France 17th Century

About

An extraordinary and very handsome large scale late 17th-early 18th century solid wood Renaissance commode with beautiful hand carved reliefs of mermaids and rectangular wood top. Purchased in France. This beautiful wood commode includes 4 wide drawers all of which have round circular wood knobs. Drawers are just below beautiful dentil molding. Each drawer has carved framing detail around the edges. Drawer interiors are original and open easily without a hint of difficulty and feature joints consistent with the period. The remarkable chest is raised on a plinth with solid claw feet below a carved designed frieze. On both sides, mermaids (merman and a merwoman) are relief carved to the face of the commode. A very unique feature! Each carving features a scaled tapering down to a scrolled bottom. Corbels are carved to resemble palm fronds and top the head of each figure just below the top of the commode. The apron is in a straight carved design that includes an intricately carved pattern. Mermaids can signify the particular sweet freedom of life, helping us pay tribute to our primordial home. By singing her song, the mermaid beckons us to return to the calm (and at times turbulent) water and seems to promise our protection if we follow. This would be a beautiful piece in a bedroom as a night table, a foyer, or an occasional table. The unique carvings make it a show stopper!
