60s Child Highchair + side table - Bernard Holdaway Tomotom Style - Hull Traders

About the Item

Red Tomotom style (1966) baby/child highchair sidetable combination that fits with a whole dining set - Attributed to by Bernard Holdaway. Stacked, it's a highchair combination. Separated, it's a low chair with a side table with a beautiful black stained glass top. The tomotom furniture, designed around a set of circular forms, in particular, cylinders and discs. Conceived in 1965 by Bernard Holdaway, the furniture was intended to be accessible to young people living on a modest income and could simply be thrown away when worn out. Holdaway had therefore opted for cheap materials. By 1969 the series comprised a hundred items including lamps, bins, shelves, and children’s toys. With their playful colours and shapes the tomotom pieces embraced the Pop aesthetic, which was characterized by its rejection of the sober colours and geometric forms of modernist design. The series became a familiar sight in a variety of spaces where young people lived out the tenets of the Pop lifestyle, with its emphasis on change and ephemerality. However, the series was only produced until 1971.
