Chairs Design James Leonard 1950s for Esavian Esa

About the Item

School chairs design James Leonard for Esavian Esa A great example of post-war utilitarian design. A UK design classic. Esavian metal framed school type stacking chairs. Designed by James Leonard 1948. It is made of beech plywood and aluminium alloy frame. A forward-looking approach to modern materials and technologies. The work of James W. Leonard appeared in the Italian design magazine, Esempi, in 1955. It is debated whether James Leonard or Jean Prouve invented the compass legs. The Chair was featured in Domus in early 1948 and was manufactured in high-pressure die-cast aluminium, using an American machine, a highly-innovative production method. Two years before the ‘innovative’ so called compass leg design of Jean Prouve. Stamped under seat (Schoolstamp) REYLAND AUG 1977. One chair has a slightly different frame design at the front of the seat (very rare version) the other chair is in the most common frame style.
