French Thomas Hache Louis XIVth Marquetry Children’s Bed, 1690

This rare French Louis XIV children’s bed is attributed to Thomas Hache by well-known French leading Hache expert Marianne Clerc in 2010. The bed is comprised of a gorgeous headboard with the 1690 date inlaid at the crown. There is an equally stunningly crafted foot board and two side rails, all with beautiful marquetry flowers, birds and butterflies. Accompanying this art piece is a letter of attribution written by Marianne Clerc in Grenoble, 2010, after the in person examination of the bed. Marianne Clerc is the author of "Hache, Cabinetmaker of Grenoble" (1997), and was commissioner of the exhibition, "Hache à Grenoble" at the Musée Dauphinois, 1997-1998. Thomas Hache was a master craftsman of marquetry in the late 1600s and early 1700s. He invented a unique process tainting layers of sycamore trees and ash trees and then assembling them in the creation of beautiful furniture and decorative objects. In 1777, under Louis XVIth, he became "ebeniste du Roi" (exclusive maker of furniture for the King's castles). The provenance for this piece is the Royal Savoy Palace in Lausanne, Switzerland where it had been exhibited as a masterpiece in their main lobby for decades. Its current owner purchased it from the Royal Savoy. This is the only children’s bed known to be made by Thomas Hache. The measurements for the different parts are as follow: Headboard height 39 inches x width 43 inches Footboard height 29 inches x width 43 inches 2 bed rails length 76 inches x height 7 inches x depth 3 inches.
