Porky Hefer’s menagerie of sculptural seating pods have become renowned and recognisable forms in the global design landscape. Here, Hefer’s design takes the form of a gargantuan piranha. Beyond the bared, leather teeth of the fish’s gaping mouth, the interior of the work has been lined with plush sheepskin. This sensory invitation creates a playful tension as the sitter is held comfortably within
the form of an animal so commonly associated with danger. Hefer’s designs – in their sheer scale, craftsmanship, and conceptual whimsy – evoke a distinct reaction in their viewers; his works have the capacity to both shock and delight. Propelled by resolute ecological concerns throughout his two- decade-long career, Hefer’s work prompts us to consider our relationship with the natural world and claim our vital role in preserving it.
