Adam Birch - Helena
About the Item
Adam Birch’s practice is driven by a deep understanding and respect for South Africa’s unique ecology. Each of his sculptural works has been intuitively crafted with a dual understanding of the tree’s innate form and how its organic structure can comfortably accommodate the human body. He carves into the timber with a chainsaw – a somewhat unconventional sculpting tool that requires a lot of control – before refining the work with hand tools. Birch’s fascination and experience with timber as a medium is multi-faceted. “No two pieces of wood ever share exactly the same colour, form or texture,” he says. This is directly reflected in the patterns formed by the grain and exaggerated by his design.
