About the Item

This is a beautiful scale model of the Ferrai hydroplane, Arno XI, raced by Nando Dell'Orto. Mounted, and of wood construction, with immense detail, varnished and featuring metal details. The seat is cushioned. The condition of this model is excellent, there are some signs of handling and possible intervention to the screen. This is certain to start a conversation in any setting, be it man cave, office, commercial or otherwise. The measurements are c. 82cm long, 32cm wide, 20cm high. We date build to c.2000s. We understand that the history of the original to be fascinating. Designed by Achille Castoldi, to set a world record for a 800kg boat, which was achieved in 1953 (150.19 mph). Castoldi built Arno XI on the shore of Lake Como and benefitting from his friendship with Ferrari racing drivers Ascari and Villoresi, gained assistance from Enzo Ferrari and the Ferrari racing team to develop and install a 4.5 litre V12 racing engine, in this case with a pair of superchargers to boot (the same engine as the Ferrari 375). Arno XI was purchased by Nando Dell'Orto following Castoldi's retirement, was modified and continued to race. This model is of the Dell'Orto 50 racer.
