About the Item

Georgian-Style Architectural Model of a Grand Spiral Staircase England, Early 20th Century (c. 1900s) Height: 25 in. Base: 17 in. diameter Upper Landing: 16 in. W × 8 in. D, Gallery 2.75 in. H A beautifully executed architect’s presentation model of a grand double-helix spiral staircase, crafted in richly patinated English hardwood. Likely produced in the early 20th century, the model reflects Georgian and Regency precedents, particularly those found in country house entry halls, library stairs, and formal gallery circulation. The staircase winds in continuous, proportionally correct treads supported by a central structural column, with elegantly turned balusters climbing in uninterrupted rhythm. The maker utilizes advanced joinery: each tread is individually let into the curved stringers, producing a smooth, load-true helix without visible nails. The sinuous handrail is carved and steamed to shape, demonstrating a level of craft associated with full-scale architectural stairwrights. The upper gallery platform is enclosed with a perimeter of tapered balusters, evoking the sense of a belvedere or piano nobile overlook. The overscaled circular base provides visual grounding and suggests the stair rising from a great hall or rotunda. These models were traditionally used by master joiners and architectural firms to: Demonstrate complex stair geometry to patrons, Train apprentice woodworkers in advanced layout, Or serve as sales / exhibition pieces highlighting technical virtuosity. Condition: Beautiful surface patination and consistent color; minor wear to edges; structurally sound and exceptional as a sculptural object.
