About the Item

Colonne de Juillet, Paris. Dark-patinated bronze with gilded figure, 15-1/2” H, circa 1870. Paris 154 foot tall Colonne de Juillet –July Column–commemorates France’s Trois Glorieuses, the 27th, 28th and 29th days of July, 1830 (see close up showing the dates inside the swags along three sides of the base), which saw the overthrow of Charles X and instatement of Louis Philippe, King of the French. This, like most French revolutions, was a bloody business, and this Column, unlike other architectural monuments, provides a circular marble mausoleum, the monument's base, for the 615 citizens who died in the undertaking. Another 200 were interred there following an 1848, Revolution. Additionally sealed within are several ancient Egyptian mummies, an historical happenstance. Above the crypt is the Column itself, all in bronze, terminating with sculptor Alexander Augustus Dumont’s monumental figure–Le Genie de la Liberte. The monument, a work of architecture, is located at the center of Paris’ Place Bastille, inside a shallow circular lawn, which formed the base of an earlier monument remembering the Bastille’s fall. That landmark, a fountain in the form of a colossal elephant, had been modeled, full size! in a temporary material–plaster–in 1813, its final vestiges giving way only for the July Column. Between the column and the elephant, we prefer the pachyderm. (Note: There is a very swell Baccarat and ormolu model of the Elephant fountain not yet in stock.) This scarce, highly realized replica of the Colonne de Juillet includes the monument’s circular sarcophagus base, and ornate perimeter circular fence. Cast in French bronze, an alloy differing from Italian and English bronze, details are very carefully worked. Other Parisian foundries in this period, notably Le Blanc Freres, cast models of the Column. However, these are neither so detailed as this anonymously authored replica, nor do they include all the monument’s rich variety of architectural elements.
