English Mid-19th Century Military Munitions Box with Royal Mottos, Coat of Arms
About the Item
English military munitions box of thick full cowhide leather over cork with painted royal coat of arms and mottos on the top: " Honi Soi (qui) Mal y Pense" and "Dieu et Mon Droit" surrounded by the rampant lion and unicorn. The leather straps have brass locking ends, wooden handles on each end, wheels were added at a later date, hinges are old replacements. No key. The red color has been restored at some point. The interior is lined with its original heavy fabric. Repairs have been made throughout its history, as this was not just a show piece, it was used for munitions storage. Mid-19th century.

The exterior of the box is inlaid with a transitional English ship, having both sail and steam capabilities , sailing on the open seas. She is made of ebony, boxwood and sails on a sycamore sea. The front panel is inlaid in perspective cube made of boxwood, satinwood, sycamore and ebony enclosed with delicate stringing. the end panels are of lively walnut and the back panel is in flame mahogany; all are enclosed by delicate stringing.. The interior has a mahogany writing panel which hinges down to write upon; the interior of that space retains its original red paper lining. The space in the bottom of the box has wells for oddments and ink; two of the compartments have bottoms which slide to the center and reveal hidden spaces beneath them.
