About the Item

Joseph Manton Sporting gun box case sans gun, the mahogany lid with flush fitting circular brass handle engraved with armorial crest, green baize lined interior with maker's trade label attached. some losses Bunbury Clan / Bunbury Baronets??? arms: argent, on a bend Sable three chess rooks of the field (Bunbury) crest: a gold leopard's face with two silver swords thrust up through it from opposing diagonals (two swords saltirewise passing through the bleeding mouth proper of a leopard's face) motto: VIS UNITA FORTIOR translates Strength United is Stronger Joseph Manton Gun maker Davies Street Berkley Square London Patentee for the Boring of Guns, Hammers of Locks, & Inventor of Platina Touch Holes & a varity of other late Improvements "Trade labels were a development of tradesmen’s cards, which some gunmakers had earlier placed inside their firearms cases. Many were attractively engraved and served as a discrete form of advertising. As well as the gunmaker’s name and address, the label would perhaps give royal, or noteworthy, appointments and any of his technical innovations which the gun-maker wished to bring to the attention of his customers. On this label, which was first used in circa 1805, Joseph Manton claimed to be the Inventor of Platina Touch-holes; the claim was repeated on another design of his label which was used from circa 1810-1812." From an article entitled An Early Industrial Application for Malleable PlatinumIts Use in Flintlock Firearms by Ian E. Cottington / Johnson Matthey & Co Limited "Joe Manton's second label design, which he used between circa 1805 and 1812, included the words “Inventor of Platina Touch Holes” as he started to use platinum touch holes in 1804-1805 as platinum is a high temperature corrosion resistant material." The possession of one of Manton's guns was an object of ambition to sportsmen.
