Amazing set of 10 authentic civil war swords. 1. Quite ornate Model 1852 Union Naval Officer's sword. Sword only without scabbard. The blade has a smooth aged grey patina. The gilded brass naval guard is beautiful with a rich un-cleaned aged patina and the "U.S.N." integrally cast in. The original ray skin grip remains intact and in nice condition. This is a scarce, ornate, and very eye catching sword that would look great in any collection. Naval officers exercised wide latitude in specifying much of the specific artistic details of the swords they purchased, this is why there seems to be endless variations of them. Common amongst most of the Model 1852 Navy officer swords is an ornate brass guard and basket showing Navy symbolism, "USN" cast amongst various leaves and nuts, the pommel is adorned with leaves with a serpent head on the quillon and an eagle with wings drooped perched on the top of the pommel. The grip is wood covered by sharkskin with brass wire. The steel blade has a rounded top, and is cut with a wide and narrow fuller stopped at the ricasso, this pattern is not etched. 2. Model 1840 "Old Wristbreaker" heavy cavalry saber without scabbard. Model 1840 sabers were extensively used by both U.S. and C.S. cavalry. The famous Southern cavalry raider Nathan Bedford Forrest carried one as did many in his command. This particular saber came out of an old antebellum home near Chickamauga, Georgia. It was, no doubt, a souvenir from the huge battle. The blade has a smooth grey patina crisply marked by manufactured "Clemen & Jung-Solingen." The brass guard is in nice condition with a deep rich un-cleaned bronze patina and has the soldier's initials nicely cut in with a pin knife. Standard features include a relatively straight wooden handle without a swell, grip is covered with leather and twisted wire, brass hilt has three branches, brass pommel cap and guard are unadorned, steel blade has flat back with narrow and wide fuller stopped at the ricasso. 3. Model 1860 light cavalry saber. The model 1860 saber was made slightly lighter than the model 1840 and became primary saber of the Federal cavalry during the course of the war. Standard features include wooden handle with a swell covered with leather and a wire grip, brass hilt has three branches, brass pommel cap and guard are unadorned, steel blade has flat back with narrow and wide fuller stopped at the ricasso,. Blade length 35 inches. The grip has replaced, leather washer is missing, blade dark with rust and some pitting, scabbard intact dark with rust and some pitting, inexpensive example. Leather strap included has J Mann brass attachment, sword came out of a barn with this strap. This is the saber only without scabbard. The blade has an attractive grey-brown patina and is lightly manufacture’s marked "C. Roby & CO., arched address- W. Chelmsford MASS U.S.-ricasso stamped 1863, inspector’s mark A.G.M." The brass guard is complete with an aged un-cleaned brown patina. The leather wrap and wire grip looks very nice. This is a wonderful "mid-war" date cavalry saber 4. Ames manufactured Model 1850 Union Foot Officer's sword. This is the sword only without scabbard. The blade has a thick smooth brown never cleaned attic patina, and the manufacture’s marked made by "AMES MFG. CO. CHICOPEE MASS" markings are clearly visible at the top of the blade.. The brass guard remains in perfect condition. The leather wrap and wire grip looks very nice. American made and marked Ames officer swords are quite rare and scarce to find. The model 1850 foot officer sword was intended for officers up to captain, these officers received a pay allowance but made their own purchase decision, hence there is a great deal of variation in officer swords. The model 1850 guard is adorned but does not bear US. Handle is leather wrapped with wire. Manufactured by Ames Manufacturing Company, Chicopee, Massachusetts. Marks on ricasso, "MADE BY / AMES MFG CO. / CHICOPEE / MASS." (Banner style "AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS" block lettering. Blade approx. length 30in. 5. Model 1860 Union Naval Cutlass. The blade has a smooth aging grey patina marked "U.S.N. - ricasso stamped 1862" inspectors’ mark D.R. The massive brass guard is in nice condition, as is the leather grip and wire. The Naval Cutlass has a distinctive look all its own. The Naval cutlass was intended for general use as ship defense, the sword is relatively short to allow for fighting in close quarters. Standard features include a wide brass sheet brass guard designed to give extra protection to the sailors hand, grip is leather and with a wire wrap, blade has sharp curve, flat top, single fuller not stopped,. Manufactured by Ames Manufacturing, Chicopee, Massachusetts. Ricasso is marked and only under magnification and the best light you can discern faintly “Made By / AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS". Blade length 26in. 6. Model 1850 Union Foot Officer's sword found while tearing down an old house a few miles from the battlefield here at Stones River. The blade has an aged grey-brown patina and is marked "Horstmann & Sons" one side and "Philadelphia" on the other. The model 1850 foot officer sword was intended for officers up to the rank captain, these officers received a pay allowance but made their own purchase decision, hence there is a great deal of variation in officer swords. The model 1850 guard is adorned but does not bear US. The regulation specified a steel scabbard, with brass mountings, a throat, middle ring, and drag. Handle is leather wrapped with wire and in good condition. Blade length 30.5in. 7. Model 1850 foot officer sword without sabered. This sword was intended for officers up to the rank of captain, these officers received a pay allowance but made their own purchase decision, hence there is a great deal of variation in officer swords. This model 1850 the guard is adorned. The handle is leather wrapped with wire both in extremely good condition. The entire length of the blade is wonderfully decorated etched with patriotic symbolism the letters "US" on one side of the blade, and the U.S. American flag on the other. Blade approx. length 30in. 8. Model 1860 light cavalry saber and original metal scabbard; the markings are ricasso stamped US 1862 Mansfield and Lamb' a model 1860 saber early date has grown hard to find. The wire wrap in the leather grip are in nice condition The model 1860 saber was made slightly lighter than the model 1840 and was the primary saber of the Federal cavalry by the end of the war. Standard features include wooden handle with a swell covered with leather and a wire grip, brass hilt has three branches, brass pommel cap and guard are unadorned, steel blade has flat back with narrow and wide fuller stopped at the ricasso, iron scabbard with iron mountings. Manufactured by Mansfield & Lamb, Forestdale, Rhode Island. Marks on ricasso, "MANSFIELD / & / LAMB / FORESTDALE RI", and "US / JH / 1862", additional inspector stampings on pommel and scabbard drag. Blade length 35 inches. Production year 1862 Mansfield and Lamb', model 1860 sabers are very rare, reportedly according to company records, less than five hundred were manufactured in 1862. 9. A M1840 Collins Non-Commissioned Officer's Sword, Manufacture’s marked on the blade Collins & Company Hartford, Conn., ricasso stamped 1861, with brass handle. This model 1840 non-commissioned officer sword was intended for sergeants; being used to convey rank, and to signal movements to troops. The sword could be used in a fight, but only as a weapon of last resort. Standard features include an all brass handle, grip gives the appearance of wire wrap but is integral with the handle, guard is made from two plates unadorned, and hilt is single branch. Blade length approximately 32 inches 10. The model 1840 saber designed for the artilleryman. Standard features include a relatively straight wooden handle covered with leather and a wire grip, brass hilt with a single bar, brass pommel cap is relatively low convex and unadorned, steel blade has distinct curve with a flat back with a narrow fuller not stopped and a wide fuller stopped at the ricasso, iron scabbard with iron mountings. Marks: Ricasso is stamped), and "US / ADK / 1863". Blade length 32 inches.
