Antony Gormley

About the Item

Author Martin Caiger-Smith A new and updated edition of the definitive monograph on the British artist Antony Gormley, now available in an affordably priced format. This beautiful and comprehensive monograph, expanded and updated in a new affordably priced edition, examines the entirety of Gormley’s career, from his earliest sketches to his best-known public installations. Martin Caiger-Smith’s “magnificent, magisterial overview” (The Independent) examines the relationship between Gormley’s life and art and identi-fies the singular vision that ties together a vast canon of work in an extraordinary range of media and materials. Best known for the major public works that most visibly represent his innovative approach to sculpture, Gormley is a prolific artist who has renegotiated the tension between the individual and the universal. Drawing on images that range from childhood snap-shots to photographs of his most recent installations, this book traces the evolution of Gormley’s work, from the drawings he makes every day in the studio, through the constantly evolving process of casting his own body in various forms, to the ultimate expression of his ideas in such masterpieces as the colossal Angel of the North or the scattered figures of Another Place. Illustrated with hundreds of images that explore the scale and impact of Gormley’s work—including his acclaimed exhibition at the Royal Academy in 2019, as well as recent installations in Florence, Delos, and New York City—and “dense with insight and deeply considered analysis from the author” (Financial Times), this book is the definitive survey of a monumental career. About The Author Martin Caiger-Smith is Head of the MA Curating the Art Museum program at the Courtauld Institute in London. In his prior roles as Head of Exhibitions and Acting Director of the Hayward Gallery, he organized major exhibitions that showed internationally, including retrospectives of Francis Bacon (1998), Roy Lichtenstein (2004), and Dan Flavin (2006). He writes frequently on art, photography, and architecture.

  • Turner's Modern World
    By Rizzoli International Publications
    Located in New York, NY
Edited by David Blayney Brown and Amy Concannon and Sam Smiles A landmark publication positions Turner as a pioneer in depicting contemporary life in the wake of dizzying changes resulting from industrialization and modernization. This monograph is tied to the first exhibition to highlight Turner's contemporary imagery--the most exceptional and distinctive aspect of his work. Rather than making claims for Turner as a proto-modernist, it explores what constituted modernity during his lifetime and what it meant to be a modern artist. Turner's career spanned the Napoleonic Wars, the rise of the British Empire, the birth of finance capitalism and modern industrialization, as well as political, scientific, and cultural advances that transformed society and shaped the modern world...

  • John Baeder’s Road Well Taken Book by Jay Williams
    Located in New York, NY
John Baeder’s Road Well Taken By: Jay Williams Echoing Paul Gauguin’s momentous decision of a century earlier, John Baeder, in 1972, suddenly made up his mind to forgo the growing riches of a career on Madison Avenue to become a full-time painter. With little more to bank on than an offer by the legendary Ivan Karp of a future show at his New York gallery, Baeder bravely gambled his livelihood on Karp’s evaluation of his first four efforts at serious painting: a diner, a motel, a gas station, a tourist camp. “They were works of cultural consequence, . . . works of visual power.” Based on color-postcards in his growing collection of roadside memorabilia, John had made blow-ups of the cards “to see what they’d look like as paintings.” It was a bold, inventive move, but typical Baeder as he continued to lay the groundwork for what soon became known, through his efforts, as “Diner Culture.” And his masterful technique inevitably put him at the forefront of the growing photo-realist movement, along with Ralph Goings and Richard Estes. Baeder’s paintings, particularly of vintage diners...

  • Torti Gallas + Partners Book by John Francis Torti, Thomas M. Gallas & Cheryl
    Located in New York, NY
Torti Gallas + Partners Architects of Community By: John Francis Torti, Thomas M. Gallas, and Cheryl A. O’Neill Foreword by Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk and Andrés Duany Passionate about designing buildings and neighborhoods that quietly transform the urban environment, Torti Gallas is committed to improving the living conditions of distressed communities throughout the United States and around the world. Combining the disciplines of architecture, planning, and urban design into a single practice, they have leveraged lessons from their early history as a suburban-based housing firm to create a practice devoted to designing and creating the housing that brings catalytic change to urban neighborhoods. Their residential commissions are not the “one-offs” of elite houses, but the multiple housing forms—mixed-use apartment buildings, rowhouses, single-family homes—that comprise the fabric of a city. Torti Gallas is dedicated to raising the level of this architecture to a new high. This aspect of the built environment is largely neglected by the architectural profession today but hearkens back to a tradition that, before World War II, was not only a respectable segment of the profession but also created some of the country’s finest neighborhoods, including Forest Hill Gardens...

  • Life at the Top Book by Kirk Henckels and Anne Walker
    By Anne Walker
    Located in New York, NY
Life at the Top New York’s Most Exceptional Apartment Buildings By: Kirk Henckels and Anne Walker Photographs by Michel Arnaud There’s a parlor game that sophisticated New Yorkers have been playing since the Gilded Age: What are New York’s best apartment buildings? Before the turn of the (last) century, the Dakota and the Osborne were obvious answers; by the 1920s the list had grown to include McKim, Mead & White’s 998 Fifth, and the ultra-soigné 820 Fifth Avenue. The Roaring Twenties witnessed the construction of some of the most luxurious apartment buildings ever designed: 740 Park Avenue, the Art Deco–inspired River House, and Rosario Candela’s extraordinary 778 and 720 Park Avenue. Now, nearly 130 years after the Dakota’s cornerstone was laid, the New York skyline features numerous new palatial residential buildings, including Robert A. M. Stern’s 15 Central Park West, Richard Meier’s glass-walled Perry Street towers, and 432 Park Avenue, New York’s tallest residential building. Kirk Henckels and Anne Walker, real estate and architectural insiders, chronicle the fortunes and features of fifteen outstanding apartment houses, bringing them to life with evocative vintage photos of exterior and interior architectural details, as well photographs of chic New Yorkers at home in their elegant abodes by the likes of Beaton, Horst, and Aarons. Accompanied by Michel Arnaud’s expressive photographs and newly commissioned architectural plans, Henckels and Walker tour some of the most beautiful apartments in these buildings as they look today, designed by the talented hands of Robert Couturier, Michael S. Smith, Thomas Jayne, Katie Ridder, Markham Roberts...
