Torti Gallas + Partners Book by John Francis Torti, Thomas M. Gallas & Cheryl

About the Item

Torti Gallas + Partners Architects of Community By: John Francis Torti, Thomas M. Gallas, and Cheryl A. O’Neill Foreword by Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk and Andrés Duany Passionate about designing buildings and neighborhoods that quietly transform the urban environment, Torti Gallas is committed to improving the living conditions of distressed communities throughout the United States and around the world. Combining the disciplines of architecture, planning, and urban design into a single practice, they have leveraged lessons from their early history as a suburban-based housing firm to create a practice devoted to designing and creating the housing that brings catalytic change to urban neighborhoods. Their residential commissions are not the “one-offs” of elite houses, but the multiple housing forms—mixed-use apartment buildings, rowhouses, single-family homes—that comprise the fabric of a city. Torti Gallas is dedicated to raising the level of this architecture to a new high. This aspect of the built environment is largely neglected by the architectural profession today but hearkens back to a tradition that, before World War II, was not only a respectable segment of the profession but also created some of the country’s finest neighborhoods, including Forest Hill Gardens in Queens, Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, and Russian Hill in San Francisco, the work of such seminal figures as Grosvenor Atterbury and Charles Platt. Torti Gallas’s extensive architectural and urban design work will be presented in three main chapters: Buildings, Neighborhoods, and Places. These will include a total of sixty built projects, as well as a sampling of current work. John Francis Torti, FAIA, President of Torti Gallas & Partners, has led his talented partners and the firm to national recognition through their work in creating inclusive places for people to live work and play. He was previously affiliated with NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center and the National Capital Planning Commission, where he worked on numerous designs to rebuild Washington after the 1968 riots. Mr. Torti has been on the teaching staff at the Catholic University of America and has served as a Visiting Professor at Harvard University, Ohio University, and the University of Maryland. He currently serves on the Board of the Congress of the New Urbanism. Thomas M. Gallas, CPA, CEO of Torti Gallas & Partners, has extensive experience with residential communities coordinating a broad cross section of participants encompassing residents and community representatives, developers, planners, architects, engineers, financial, social, and other expert consultants brought together to successfully plan and implement revitalization strategies. He is the author of “Creating the New American Community” in the book Casa y Comunidad: Latino Home and Neighborhood Design, edited by Henry Cisneros and John Rosales. In January 2016 President Obama appointed Mr. Gallas to the National Capital Planning Commission. Cheryl A. O’Neill, AICP, is a Principal and Urban Designer at Torti Gallas, where she is responsible for directing and coordinating the design and planning of both large- and small-scale communities and challenging urban architectural projects. Ms. O’Neill has served as Adjunct Faculty at the University of Maryland College Park and the Catholic University of America; she holds a Bachelors of Architecture from Cornell University and is a Certified Planner (AICP). Francis Sultana Designs and Interiors By: Bronwyn Cosgrave Edited by Bronwyn Cosgrave Foreword by Yana Peel Contributors Gianluca Longo, Brook Mason This book, investigating Francis Sultana’s work as an interior designer, celebrates the 10th anniversary of his eponymous London studio and highlights an important professional achievement. • John Baeder’s Road Well Taken Book by Jay Williams
    Located in New York, NY
John Baeder’s Road Well Taken By: Jay Williams Echoing Paul Gauguin’s momentous decision of a century earlier, John Baeder, in 1972, suddenly made up his mind to forgo the growing riches of a career on Madison Avenue to become a full-time painter. With little more to bank on than an offer by the legendary Ivan Karp of a future show at his New York gallery, Baeder bravely gambled his livelihood on Karp’s evaluation of his first four efforts at serious painting: a diner, a motel, a gas station, a tourist camp. “They were works of cultural consequence, . . . works of visual power.” Based on color-postcards in his growing collection of roadside memorabilia, John had made blow-ups of the cards “to see what they’d look like as paintings.” It was a bold, inventive move, but typical Baeder as he continued to lay the groundwork for what soon became known, through his efforts, as “Diner Culture.” And his masterful technique inevitably put him at the forefront of the growing photo-realist movement, along with Ralph Goings and Richard Estes. Baeder’s paintings, particularly of vintage diners...

  • Moscow and St. Petersburg 1900–1920 Art, Life and Culture Book by John E. Bowlt
    Located in New York, NY
Moscow and St. Petersburg 1900–1920 Art, Life, and Culture of the Russian Silver Age By: John E. Bowlt The twilight of Imperial Russia witnessed a sudden renaissance of the visual, literary, and performing arts, alongside the more exuberant pomp and circumstance of the court and high society. Here was a Silver Age, as it is known in Russia. Much of this new energy was indebted to the movement known as Symbolism, which fell on fertile soil in Mother Russia. Seeking to transcend the conventional barriers of bourgeois civility, the Russian Symbolists lived and created on the edge, which often earned them the sobriquet of Decadent or Degenerate. But, as Sergei Diaghilev declared, theirs was not a moral or artistic decline, but a voyage of inner discovery and a refurbishing of a national culture. Some of the individuals and institutions associated with the Russian Silver Age are well known—Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, the painting and decoration of Alexandre Benois, Leon Bakst, and Mikhail Vrubel...

  • Yves Thomas, Waves and Storms, French Artist-Painter Book, by Yves Thomas, 2011
    Located in Atlanta, GA
Yves Thomas, Vagues et Tempetes (Waves and Storms), French-English book by Yves Thomas, 2011. Yves Thomas is a recognized listed French artist born in Normandy, France, in 1937. The most beautiful works of Yves Thomas have something musical, sonata, and symphony mingle in the light of the painting. The black rocks declined in purple-gray, are like the shadows of a mysterious world whose surprising beauty we can observe. In these "visionary" paintings, everything evokes the passage of time, from the wear and tear of stones to stranded ships. And yet, the light of the artwork escapes this erosion so much it is alive and plays with its timelessness. Islands, reefs, and rocks do not belong to any identifiable country. Only light gives life and meaning to these landscapes taken from the soul. This light merges with time which gives birth to these spaces. This time-light stands at the heart of emotion itself. This spiritual time haunts us with its intrinsic presence and escapes the intellect to exist better. It offers the spectator the possibility of becoming clairvoyant in turn. The art of Yves Thomas is an invitation to an inner journey but also the authentic testimony of an artist working beyond fashions and having been able to remain faithful to his dreams. He allowed the light of his paintings to flourish. Through the miracle of creation, Yves Thomas bears witness to the light of our dreams. (credit: Artthomparis) About the Artist: At the age of 14, Yves Thomas copied a large painting by Antoine Jean Gros, named "The plague-stricken of Jaffa," in the Louvre Museum Yves Thomas readily admits that "the result was not completely satisfactory" but, coming out of adolescence, he mastered drawing. At 17, Yves Thomas joined the French Navy for five years. One can imagine the artist scrutinizing the ocean waves and attempting to capture their moving forms in his sketchbooks. During this period, he discovered and practiced "The Camera Lucida" technique assiduously. An increasingly rigorous design naturally leads to his "Ingres" period. Open to different trends and curious by nature, Yves Thomas began, a few years after, abstract paintings and then returned to a hyperrealistic drawing...
