Beaux-Arts Estates, A Guide to the Architecture of Long Island by Liisa and Donald Sclare. New York: Viking Press, 1980. First edition hardcover with dust jacket. 274 pp. A tour of the Beaux-Arts architecture of Long Island estates, illustrating the elaborate method of design of such notable architects as McKim, Mead & White, Carrère & Hastings, Delano & Aldrich, Warren & Wetmore and Hunt & Hunt. The estates were built by many families such as; the Vanderbilts, Whitneys, Fricks, Bendels, Roosevelts and Du Ponts. It includes over 200 photographs, plans and elevations and discusses the histories of the houses, the families, the architects and the influence that the Ecole des Beaux-Arts has had on American architecture.

This is a first printing of one of the great nineteenth-century English color plate books illustrating the scenery along the Seine from Paris to Le Havre. Luminous impressions of the plates, beautifully hand-colored. Engraved by Thomas Sutherland (1785 – 1825) and Daniel Havell (1785 – 1826) from sketches and drawings by Augustus Pugin (1812 – 1852) and John Gendall (1790 – 1865), the illustrations also include a vignette on the title page representing the Château de Rosny (home of the Duchess of Berry...
