The Birds and Beasts of Shakespeare - an illustrated portfolio

About the Item

Cheloniidae Press - Kinney, Arthur F. (texts); Alan James Robinson (ill.). The Birds and Beasts of Shakespeare. Easthampton, Massachusetts: Cheloniidae Press, 1990. Printed to mark the 10th anniversary of the Cheloniidae Press (and the first book of the press with the Cheloniidae watermark), this book uses Shakespeare's original texts addressing the natural history, folklore, and mythology of the birds and beasts in his plays. The text was written by Arthur F. Kinney, Thomas W. Copeland Professor Literary History at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The wood engravings were accomplished by Alan James Robinson on end-grain English boxwood from T.N. Lawrence & Sons of London. The type was set at M & H Type Foundry of San Francisco and printed by Harold Patrick McGrath . Folio, unbound folded sheets, 15 7/8 x 10 1/2 inches (402 x 266 mm) folded, 26 signatures + 3 additional duplicates, edges uncut; with 54 wood engravings depicting the birds and beasts found in Shakespeare's plays and poems, plus two portraits of the Bard: one etching and one wood-engraving; text printed in black with caramel-colored rule on each page, with quotes from Shakespeare also in caramel-colored ink. The portrait frontispiece is in 2 states showing Shakespeare surrounded by animals appearing in the various plays; 2 sheets of ochre and cream marbled paper for endpapers; publisher's prospectus printed recto and verso on grey paper. Limited edition of 155 copies printed. This example of unbound printed sheets is unnumbered being 'Artist Proof VIII' and bearing the SIGNATURE OF THE ARTISTS on the colophon page. Condition: Fine.

    A fantastic, bright set of this Nonesuch limited edition of William Shakespeare's works. The first edition of this Nonesuch set. A super set with much more even colour than usually seen. With the text based on the first folio, with quarto variants and a selection of modern readings. It follows the text of the First Folio faithfully, in its misprints and intermittent use of a comma for a full stop at the close of an uninterrupted speech. The editors note describes in detail the intention and treatment regarding substantive errors between the early editions. Numbered 60 of 1600 copies of this work, which have been designed by Francis Meynell and printed by Walter Lewis, printer to the University at the Cambridge University Press. The Nonesuch Press specialised in limited edition and private press. They were founded by Francis Meynell, his second wife Vera Mendel and their friend David Garnett.
