About the Item
These are the now very scarce set of two catalogues produced by Christie's for the sale of the contents of Dumfries House which contained a large collection of furniture by Chippendale which had been commissioned specifically for the house - the Sub title of the catalogues being "A Chippendale Commission". The sale never took place hence the rarity of these, as Prince Charles and a group of charities and charitable minded people stepped in at the eleventh hour and saved the house and contents as a complete unit and now it is open to the public to view what is quite probably the most important single collection of Chippendale furniture under one roof anywhere in the world. The house and grounds and the collection are now open to the public.
