About

Byrd, Richard E. Discovery: The Story of the Second Byrd Antarctic Expedition. New York: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1935. Signed, stated first edition. Octavo. Original dust jacket with custom slipcase. This is a stated first edition of Richard Byrd’s Discovery: The Story of the Second Byrd Antarctic Expedition. This book is boldly signed by Byrd on a front free endpaper. The first edition was published out of New York by G.P. Putnam’s Sons in 1935. It includes an introduction by Claude A. Swanson, Secretary of the Navy. It is presented here in its original dust jacket with a custom, archival slipcase. This book tells the adventurous story of rear admiral Richard E. Byrd’s (1888-1957) second journey to Antarctica. His journey was launched during the Great Depression, which was cause for great public skepticism at the time. Though, following his first expedition, Byrd was eager to return as there was still a great deal of the continent left undiscovered and undocumented. This book recounts the events of his expedition, from which he narrowly escaped with his life after suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. Byrd was known as a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics. He was also an American naval officer and recipient of the United States Medal of Honor. His first Antarctic expedition of 1928-1930, recounted in his 1938 book Alone, established a well-equipped base dubbed “Little America.” Byrd returned in 1933-1935, again visiting the base Little America, with the aim of mapping and claiming the area surrounding the Pole. He later returned at the request of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939-1941 in order to take command of the U.S. Antarctic service. Byrd was made officer in charge of the United States’ Antarctic programs in 1955 and became the senior authority for government Antarctic matters. Condition: Very good condition. Healthy papers, internally clean. Offered here in its stated first edition with an authentic, bold signature from Byrd on a free endpaper. Presented in the original dust jacket, which displays minor shelf wear and is protected in mylar. Accompanied by a custom, archival cloth slipcase with an image of Byrd on one side.
