Felix Marcilhac Collection Privee, Sotheby's Catalogue, 2014

About the Item

This is the catalogue published in 2014 by Sotheby's for the sale of the private collection of Felix Marcilhac. As might be expected this was one of the finest collections which included examples of furniture and the decorative arts from the first half of the 20th century, by makers and designers of world renown such as Jean Dunand, Jean Michel Frank, Andre Groult, Rene Lalique, Pierre Chareau, Puiforcat, Marcel Coard, Gustav Miklos and Sandoz, plus many more. 316 lots with descriptions in French and English together with color photographs, 424 pages. This catalogue comes in the original soft wrapper together with the secondary catalogue which has a thumb nail photo of all 316 lots, price estimate, a very brief description and the name of the designer.

  • Art Deco Side Table
    By Marcel Coard
    Located in New York, NY
This small side table was made from two materials that are rarely combined: red oak which is commonplace, and shagreen which is rare. Shagreen is the hide of the stingray. It's leather-like, but more durable, and interesting-looking, with a natural patterning of circular denticles. For use it’s sanded down and tinted a color. Today stingrays are commercially farmed in Southeast Asia, but those hides are coarse and have large denticles, unlike the one used on this table which was naturally fished in Northern European waters. Fashionable in 18th century Europe, stingraw was used to make cases for spectacles, scientific instruments, sewing implements, and cosmetics. It then fell out of favor in the 19th century before becoming all the rage again in 1910s and 1920s Paris, where it was used for one-of-a-kind furnishings by Paul Iribe, Andre Groult, Pierre Legrain, Jean-Michel Frank, and Marcel Coard...

  • Magnum Photobook, The Catalogue Raisonne
Located in New York City, NY
The first complete illustrated bibliography of 1,000 iconic photobooks created by members of the renowned photo agency This fascinating in-depth survey brings Magnum's history alive through the genre of the photobook, an essential vehicle for photographers to share their work. Its pages include unpublished behind-the-scenes material, together with ephemera from the photographers' archives about the making of their books. With an introduction by Fred Ritchin and texts by Carole Naggar, this book explores the evolution of the photobook, as well as the important role that Magnum has played in the history of documentary photography. "If the photographic life were a treasure hunt, The Magnum Photobook is a rightfully vaunted treasure chest. Fred Ritchin and Carole Naggar's introduction expanded my understanding of how the photobook, as expressed early and continuously by Magnum photographers, plays a critical role in defining and expressing a photographer's voice beyond the settings of assignment-based work. Then learning about the creation of each book is the richest of rewards, made all the more so by a final section of the book that shows the early iterations of many of the photobooks. This book about books is one that I must have in the library." —Mike Davis...

  • Henrik Tengler, HT 2014 Brown Leather Time Chair by One Collection
By Henrik Tengler, One Collection / HFJ
    Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
The tme chair is a dynamic and comfortable conference chair designed by Henrik Tengler in 2012. The chair is purposely designed not to follow current trends. Instead its aesthetic resembles the cosmopolitan functionalism of the Bauhaus period. Henrik Tengler has achieved this by incorporating an open steel frame and adding rm cushions. The 12 mm steel tube construction of the chair ensures unbeatable strength in spite of the delicate expression of the chair. Furthermore, the oversized cushions create a titillating exchange between the carrying and carried elements of the chair. Lastly, time and effort has gone into shaping every detail of the chair, giving it a highly exclusive feel. The chair allows for dynamic use and positions by responding to your movements. With clever features and ergonomic support, the time chair...
