Kane, Paul (1810-1871) Wanderings of an Artist Among the Indians of North America; From Canada to Vancouver Island and Oregon Through the Hudson's Bay Company Territory, and Back Again. London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, and Roberts, 1859. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, 8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches (216 x 133 mm). xviii, 455, viii pages, shaken. Publisher's half leather with marbled paper boards (worn). Illustrated with chromolithographic portrait frontispiece, large folding map, numerous text wood engravings, and an additional seven full-page color lithographs (eight in total, including the frontis). Color plates and folding map are clean and bright. Light browning to inner margin of frontis portait, not affecting image Provenance: Bookplate of William H. Claflin Jr., with inscription in ink from his wife Helen dated June 8, 1930 on front pastedown. "Travels largely confined to Canada but visits to Wisconsin and Oregon and account of the murder of Dr. Whitman are included." [Howes K7].

Laid paper, deckle edges, t.e.g. With a captioned frontispieces, "And a River went out of Eden", on coated paper after a pen-and-ink drawing by Walford Graham Robertson (1866 – 1948); tissue guard. Original blue-green cloth with gilt illustration on the spine (Toad dressed in a driving outfit and goggles) and upper cover ( Pan playing flute to Rat and Mole by the river) and a single gilt rule on the upper cover. In the second issue publisher's pictorial peach-color dust jacket printed in black with price of 7/6 instead of 6/-.The spine of the dust jacket slightly darkened but in excellent condition with a couple small tears at head expertly repaired on verso; scattered foxing and discoloration to dust jacket and pages, wear to spine edges consistent with age.
