Octavo, 8 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches (216 x 133 mm). xviii, 455, viii pages, shaken. Publisher's half leather with marbled paper boards (worn). Illustrated with chromolithographic portrait frontispiece, large folding map, numerous text wood engravings, and an additional seven full-page color lithographs (eight in total, including the frontis). Color plates and folding map are clean and bright. Light browning to inner margin of frontis portait, not affecting image Provenance: Bookplate of William H. Claflin Jr., with inscription in ink from his wife Helen dated June 8, 1930 on front pastedown.
"Travels largely confined to Canada but visits to Wisconsin and Oregon and account of the murder of Dr. Whitman are included." [Howes K7].
