From Marseille to New York 1940-1945, French/English Book, by Bernard Noel, 1985

About the Item

Marseille - New York. 1940-1945, une liaison surrealiste (Marseille - New York. 1940-1945, a surrealistic link), French/English book by Bernard Noel, 1985. Through archival photographs and artwork, this book tells the dual story of Marseille, France, and New York during the years of World War II. The book explores the connections between cities and people with storytelling but is very visual. This work recounts the now mythical story of French poets, painters, and writers (many of them Jewish) who escaped from Paris to Marseille after the surrender of France in 1940. Departing from Marseille, they were smuggled overseas through the efforts of Varian Fry and the Emergency Rescues Committees. This is how André Breton and his entourage arrived in New York in 1941 and launched Surrealism in America. Excellent documentation of that story, with text both in French and English and superb illustrations. This is a beautiful coffee table art book. Features: Title: Marseille - New York. 1940 - 1945 - Une liaison surréaliste. Author: Bernard Noel. Hardcover book with dust jacket. Language: French and English. Full of black and white and full-color photographs and illustrations. 142 pages. Dimensions: 11.82 in x 12.19 in (30 x 31 cm). Published in 1985 by Editions Andre Dimanche. This is a rare find. This book will never be re-published. The original model was destroyed following a fire at the publisher's premises. The book is in good condition, with minor wear due to regular reading.
