About the Item
New York, L'Humanite au Metre Cube (New York, Humanity by Cubic Foot), French book by David Lachterman, 1966.
About this book, the author said: "Anything that can be written about New York is never more than a foreword.
We could have devoted this book to Moscow and to show admiration, to Paris and to show enthusiasm, to Belgrade and to show tenderness, or to Rome and to show idolatry. But we cannot devote it to New York and be calm.
New York is like Brigitte Bardot, Iris Coffee, or Charles de Gaulle. We love it or hate it. We only judge by it, or we swear by it!
Indifference, skepticism, or simply serenity are neither appropriate nor paramount. Because the New York of eight million inhabitants, vast as a French department, high as the Eiffel Tower, rich as a few republics, poor as only the Bowery can be, crazy as the Marx Brothers, and beautiful as an American car, this New York only supports grandiloquence.
Initially, we did not want to make this book a guide to New York, a list of good addresses, a sociological commentary, or an apology for capitalism. It's up to you to decipher following the dotted line."
This is a beautiful coffee table art book.
