GYPSIES - Josef Koudelka - 1st U.S. edition, New York, 1975

About the Item

An Aperture publication, 1st U.S edition, New York, 1975. Hardback, English text. Koudelka‘s first project in his photography career - The Gypsies, is considered a seminal work in the history of photojournalism. This longitudinal study took place during the period between 1962 and 1971, Koudelka returned home just two days before the Soviet Invasion of Prague in 1968 and held numerous negatives which are testimony to the atrocities committed. These arresting images contained in this book would soon become a dramatic international symbol for the Romani sufferings. Koudelka’s contempt for all commentary and his refusal of captions add to the cogency of his questioning of his subjects. Beneath these weather-beaten faces, is a burning intensity Koudelka, and only Koudelka alone could have captured. Koudelka’s gaze through the photographic lens beckons for the revealing of the ultimate nature of his subjects. Complemented with a lavishly amount of masterfully reproduced black-and-white plates, an essay on the history of the Gypsy community by Willy Guy, this book is a classic of documentary photography, from Magnum Photo’s very own Koudelka, with an unmatched intensity for seeing. A Rizzoli publication, 1st U. S. edition, New York, 1991. Hardback with English text. Translated from the original French edition. Synonymous with Haute Couture, Madame Vionnet’s sensuous yet technically excellent couture lent her the reputation of being ‘the architect among dressmakers’. Renowned for her invention of the bias cut, which sumptuously drapes into sinuous folds following the natural curves of the female body, it was an unparalleled invention which highlighted a dignified, classic yet modern and femme fatale ideal femme of the 30s . An admirer of Grecian statues...
