Jacques Callot "Misères Et Malheurs De La Guerre" Collection of Engraving 17th

About the Item

“Les Misères Et Les Malheurs De La Guerre” (“The misfortunes of war”) more commonly called “the great miseries of war” (“The great miseries of war”) is a major work by the 17th century artist century Jacques Callot. This collection dating from 1633 is composed of 18 etchings on laid paper (90 x 190mm), bound in a collection edited by Israel Henriet (170x260mm). In good condition, this collection is the third state of the engraving (out of three) Engraving number 16 is in the second state. Under each engraving appear six verses from the Abbot of Marolles. The paper is watermarked L.G, il masso. These different engravings express Callot's critical view of the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and its devastation on his society and its soldiers. The cover of the work was made between the 17th and 18th centuries, which perhaps explains its few defects on the edges and sides. Good general condition despite some foxing on certain engravings. The 18 copper plates of these engravings are today kept at the Musée Lorrain in Nancy. Jacques Callot was a 17th century Lorraine designer and engraver. He is considered one of the masters of engraving. His engravings are characterized by great clarity and also deep inking. The scenes represented are very abundant on fairly small surfaces. He began an apprenticeship in Rome in 1609. He joined his friend Israel Henriet there. There he met artists like Antonio Tempesta, etcher. He entered the workshop of Philippe Thomassin, who taught him the technique of engraving with a burin. At the end of 1611, he joined Florence and received the Medici protectorate. He produced 15 of the 29 plates entrusted to Antonio Tempesta, where he experimented with engraving. He then became an engraver for the festivities organized at the Palais des Offices. From 1621, he returned to Lorraine. He then published picturesque series based on his memories of Italy, Bali and Gobbi. He also produced a series called The Beggars. He also began work on a series of 490 plates constituting The Book of Saints, published after his death. During this period, he also produced a sequel entitled Les Bohemiens, as well as Les Supplices.
