Crichton, Michael, Jurassic Park and The Lost World. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1990, New York: Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, 1995. Signed and Inscribed, first editions, two-volumes. Dust jackets and housed in custom clamshell. Presented are Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park and The Lost World. Both books are first edition copies. Jurassic Park was published out of New York by Alfred A. Knopf in 1990. The Lost World was published out of New York by Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group in 1995. Both books are individually signed and inscribed by the author. They include the original dust jackets and are housed in a custom clamshell case. The books center on a story that depicts a disastrous attempt to create a theme park of clone dinosaurs. In 1990, before Jurassic Park was even released, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment bought the rights to the novel to create a media franchise. The book was successful, along with Steven Spielberg’s 1993 film adaptation. This led to four sequels in film, although only the first two movies were based on Crichton’s novels. In 1983, Crichton conceived the first ideas for a screenplay about a dinosaur being cloned from fossil DNA. After fighting with the idea, he produced the story of Jurassic Park as it is known today. Crichton spent many years writing the book, during which time Steven Spielberg learned of the novel. Warner Bros. Pictures, Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures all bid for the rights to the story before it was even published. In 1990, Universal acquired the rights with the help of Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment producers. Crichton sold the rights for $1.5 million and retained a percentage of the gross profits. After Jurassic Park was released onto home video, Crichton was pressured into producing a sequel. Crichton is reported as declining offers until Spielberg himself offered to direct a movie of Crichton’s sequel. In 1995, The Lost World was published and the film adaptation began production the following year. Michael Crichton has written other novels, including Prey, Timeline, and Congo. Crichton's writing always centers around the action and science fiction genre. His novels often explore advances in technology and human's interaction with it-- primarily human's faulty interaction with it. The scientific and technological side of his writing is derived from his extensive medical and scientific training. Condition: Jurassic Park: Hardcover with dust jacket. Signed and inscribed on the half-title page in black felt tip, "For Joe Collins and Family, Best wishes, Michael Crichton, 4/19/94, LA." No visible tears or stains. Covers clean and bright, edges sharp. Very good. The Lost World: Signed and inscribed on the title page by author, "For Ronnie, Best wishes, Michael Crichton." Stated first trade edition on copyright page. Virtually no wear to jacket. Covers are clean and bright. Edges are sharp. No tears or creases. Very good. Both books housed in a custom red cloth clamshell with quarter black leather. Image of the Jurassic Park logo is pasted to the front of the clamshell. The spine of the clamshell features gilt tooling and raised bands.
