Last African Warriors by Gianni Giansanti

About the Item

The Last African Warriors by Gianni Giansanti. Published by White Star Publishers, 2011. Hardcover with dust jacket. A splendid pictorial journey across the immense and magnificent continent and its people. Through images of extraordinary power and immediacy, photographer Gianni Giansanti takes the reader on a journey of discovery in Africa, and illustrates the life and traditions of the tribes who live there with a moving collection of African portraits. Each photograph becomes a masterpiece of abstract art, revealing close-ups of the tribes' traditional body paintings. They use their bodies as canvases, painting their skin with pigments made from powdered volcanic rock and adorning themselves with materials obtained from the world around them, such as flowers, leaves, grasses, shells and animal horns. African tribes are especially adept at this art, and - imbued with an exquisite sense of color and form - usually paint their naked bodies with colorful dots, stripes and circles, and encased themselves in elaborate arrangements of vegetation and found objects. This art is endlessly inventive, magical and, above all, fun. The book offers an incredible look at the stunning range of colors and textures of the life and people in Africa, while recording the fascinating beauty of a world always in danger of extinction. 276 color photographs. • Earth to Sky: Among Africa's Elephants, a Species in Crisis by Michael Nichols

Earth to Sky: Among Africa's Elephants, A Species in Crisis by Michael Nichols. Published by Aperture Foundation, Incorporated, 2013. 1st Ed hardcover, no dust jacket as issued. Elephants are among the earth's most sentient beings. They remember, they experience grief and joy, fear and love. Indeed, as our knowledge of these extraordinary creatures increases, the more they transcend all preconceptions of animal behavior. Michael "Nick" Nichols, longtime photographer for National Geographic as well as the magazine's editor-at-large for photography, has been working with African elephants for more than twenty years. In Earth to Sky he tells their story through poignant images that bring us directly into their habitat the lush forests and open savannas, or stark landscapes ravaged by human intervention-to observe the animals' daily engagements and activities. Nichols's photographs are accompanied here by the words of such celebrated figures in the field of conservation as Lain Douglas-Hamilton, J. Michael Fay, Peter Matthiessen, Cynthia Moss, David Quammen, and many others. In addition, Nichols engages us in his photographic journey with personal and informative introductions to each of the book's four chapters-exploring life in the wild, the ivory trade, family interactions, and programs for orphaned elephants. The survival of elephants is under dire threat from humankind, most immediately from the market for ivory. More than twenty-five thousand elephants are slaughtered each year, and their ivory is sold at astronomically high prices to countries such as China, Japan, the Philippines, and Singapore. African elephant refuges are under siege; many park rangers...

Vanishing Africa hardcover book by Giann Giansanti author photographer. This book represents months of work of planning and in the field, but above all it is a tribute to the eternal beauty of Africa; the photographs and text 'steal' from the peoples of the Omo a fragment of their mystery and truth. But with delicacy and respect. By examining a small region in the heart of the continent, the books attempts to trace the roots of remotest Africa; the cradle of man, where ancestral bonds with nature still exist. It is a place where the link with the dark side of existence is not hidden, as happens in the West, but exhibited. By means of his camera and his pen, in this book the author has encapsulated long years of study of the most interesting peoples...
