Presented is a first edition, second printing of Dewitt C. Peters’ The Life and Adventures of Kit Carson, The Nestor of the Rocky Mountains From Facts Narrated by Himself. The book was published in New York by W. R. C. Clark & Meeker, in 1859. It is presented here, rebound in 1/4 dark brown leather spine over brown pebbled paper boards, with a front square leather inlay of a horse and cowboy stamped in gilt on the front and the spine titled in gilt. The book features 10 original plates, drawn by Arthur Lumley and engraved by N. Orr & Co. Dewitt Clinton Peters (1829-1876) was an author of over 26 works of western pioneer life and was renowned as the biographer of "Kit" Carson. Peters first published The Life and Adventures of Kit Carson in 1858. The biography was expanded in 1873 and in the 1880s it was revised and repackaged with the new title of Pioneer Life and Frontier Adventures. It was a popular edition throughout the 1880s, with several printings by different publishers. Kit Carson was an American frontiersman, trapper, and soldier, who earned folk hero status in the late 19th century. In the 1830s, he accompanied Ewing Young on an expedition to Mexican California and joined fur-trapping expeditions into the Rocky Mountains. After a chance meeting with explorer John C. Fremont in the 1840s, Fremont hired Carson to help guide his explorations of the Great Plains, Rocky Mountains, and California. Fremont’s official reports lionized the frontier scout, and his public popularity grew. He became a federal Indian agent in the 1850s, primarily working with the Utes and the Jicarilla Apaches, and later served the Union Army in the Civil War. Carson oversaw the forced relocation of Navajos to the Bosque Redondo reservation at Fort Sumner. In 1865, Carson moved to Colorado after the war and was appointed the commander of Fort Garland. He negotiated a peace treaty with the Utes. Carson is remembered as an icon of the frontiersman days of the American West. In his life, dime novels and biographies like this one, embellished Carson’s rugged trapper and scout image, transforming him into a popular western hero. Carson was also remembered through the designation of such locales as Carson City, Nevada, and Carson Pass in California. Much later, he was memorialized in Western-themed movies and TV shows like The Adventures of Kit Carson, which aired from 1951 to 1955. The illustrations in this printing are by the Dublin-born Arthur Lumley (1837-1912). Lumley later became an acclaimed artist during the Civil War. There are ten engraved plates in this book, illustrating the life events, battles fought, and landscapes traversed by Carson. CONDITION: Good condition overall. 8vo. Rebound in 1/4 dark brown leather spine over brown pebbled paper boards, with a front square leather inlay with a horse and cowboy stamped in gilt, and spine titled in gilt. Marbled paper edges. Renewed endpages with original preliminaries. Interior pages have scattered stains and foxing, moderate toning. With original illustrations, drawn by Arthur Lumley, engraved by N. Orr & Co. 10 plates in total. 534 pp. Book Dimensions: 9 3/8" H x 6 3/4" W x 2 1/4" D. Accompanied by our company's letter of authenticity.
