About the Item

Life on the Edge: A Guide to California's Endangered Natural Resources. Wildlife Crabtree, Margo. Title: Life on the Edge:A Guide to California's Endangered Natural Resources. Publisher: Brand: Heyday Books Publication Date: 1st edition, 1994 Binding: Soft cover. 568 Pages. Dimensions ? : ? 9 x 1.5 x 12 inches Synopsis: Discusses California's eleven bioregions, describes each endangered species, and covers such topics as butterfly poaching. This is an extraordinary book, delivering a somber appraisement in an exceptionally attractive and imaginative format. The introduction describes California's 11 bioregions, the impact of development, and conservation legislation. Each phylogenetic section (mammals, birds, fish, etc.) begins with a Native American legend or legends and an interview with an appropriate expert concerning wildlife management and public awareness of wildlife endangerment. Each endangered species is then described in engaging, nontechnical writing, including estimates of remaining populations, significant threats to survival, and current conservation and recovery measures; map insets show range and distribution. A pleasing profusion of sidebars and short essays covers such diverse topics as observations by nineteenth-century travelers, the consequences of oil spills and water diversions, the DDT disaster, and butterfly poaching. Copious photos and illustrations (462 total, 342 in color), will undoubtedly make this intrinsically important book a visual pleasure as well.

(editor), Illustrated by Tupper Ansel Blake Science · Hardcover · Non-fiction · 144 pages. This is a stunning photographic guide to the six major California regions--from the Sierra Nevada to the desert--and their wildlife. In a highly readable style that mingles authority and eloquence, Leopold reminds us of the aesthetic, educational, and scientific values of undeveloped land. Oversized Wraps. Very Good +. First Edition, First Printing. Inscribed By The Illustrator. ISBN:0-520-06024-5. A wonderful photography book on the wildlife of California. Beautiful color photographs by Tupper Ansel Blake! This copy has a great inscription from Blake to singer/songwriter, Linda Ronstadt. A great association copy linking the photographer to Ronstadt, a famous nature activist. Synopsis: The universal spread of civilization has encompassed the wildness of California. While some of the original ecosystems have been preserved, others have been reduced to tattered remnants. Rich and varied habitats, with their plants and animals, are gone forever, destroyed by the conversion of valley lands to agriculture, the damming of streams, the cutting of forests, the paving of meadows. Wild California makes a persuasive argument for identifying and protecting areas of unspoiled California before they disappear. This is a stunning photographic guide to the six major California regions--from the Sierra Nevada to the desert--and their wildlife. To A. Starker Leopold, conservationist, naturalist, wildlife biologist, and educator, the delicate balance between plants, animals, and humans in each community is precious and fragile. In a highly readable style that mingles authority and eloquence, Leopold reminds us of th aesthetic, educational, and scientific values of undeveloped land. Tupper Ansel Blake, naturalist and wildlife photographer, has contributed one hundred color images that marvelously convey the special beauties of this state. Fortunately, the rich legacy of early California can still be found, and Tupper Blake's images with Starker Leopold's words are powerful evidence that this wilderness is worth preserving for future generations. About the Author: A. Starker Leopold was Professor of Zoology and Forestry at the University of California, Berkeley. By the time of his death in 1983, he had become a leading figure in the study of the land and wildlife, receiving honors for his contributions to biological science, conservation, and education. National Geographic The Photo Ark The Quest to Document the World's Animals
Located in Moreno Valley, CA
National Geographic The Photo Ark: One Man's Quest to Document the World's Animals. Animal Ark: Celebrating our Wild World in Poetry and Pictures (National Geographic Kids) Hardcover – February 14, 2017 Synopsis: The lush and unique photography in this book represents National Geographic's Photo Ark, a major initiative and lifelong project by photographer Joel Sartore to make portraits of the world's animals—especially those that are endangered. His powerful message, conveyed with humor, compassion, and art: to know these animals is to save them. Animal Ark: Celebrating our Wild World in Poetry and Pictures (National Geographic Kids) Hardcover – February 14, 2017 by Kwame Alexander (Author), Mary Rand Hess (Author), Deanna Nikaido Sartore is circling the globe, visiting zoos and wildlife rescue centers to create studio portraits of 12,000 species, with an emphasis on those facing extinction. With a goal of photographing every animal in captivity in the world, he has photographed more than 6,000 already and now, thanks to a multi-year partnership with National Geographic, he may reach his goal. This book showcases his animal portraits: from tiny to mammoth, from the Florida grasshopper sparrow to the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Paired with the eloquent prose of veteran wildlife writer Douglas Chadwick, and an inspiring foreword from Harrison Ford, this book presents a thought-provoking argument for saving all the species of our planet. About the Author: JOEL SARTORE is a photographer, speaker, author, teacher, and a 25-year contributor to National Geographic magazine as well as Audubon, Geo, Time, Life, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated. He has written several books including National Geographic's Rare: Portraits of America's Endangered Species, Photographing Your Family, and Let's Be Reasonable, a collection of essays from the CBS Sunday Morning show. Sartore and his work have been the subjects of several national broadcasts, including the National Geographic Channel's Explorer, the NBC Nightly News, NPR's Weekend Edition, and an hour-long PBS documentary, At Close Range. He is also a contributor on the CBS Sunday Morning Show with Charles Osgood...
