Madame Carven - Grand Couturier

About the Item

Published by Musée Galleria - Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris, 1st edition 2002 padded Hardcover with French text. This special volume was published alongside the exhibition Madame Carven, Grand Couturier by Musée Galleria. With a warm, personal touch from Madame Carven herself, an inscription on the front page is dedicated to a young lady called Fleur, who, at that time, was working in the luxury industry. set out to become a couturier for women with petite frames like herself, her elegant designs imbued a quality of lightness and carefreeness that enlivened every thread of the fabric. These beautiful yet nonchalant fabrics are made with diverse materials such as madras, batik and raffia. With the constant stirrings of imagination with her grand tours, Carven cultivated an exquisite taste with a sprinkle of the exotic. She was a true bohemian and made these elements fashionable before it became “à la mode”. Carven soon made a name for herself with her extraordinary talent and flair, she attracted a crowd of famed clientele, notably Edith Piaf and celebrity ballet dancer Zizi Jeanmaire. Sumptuously illustrated with black-and-white and coloured archive photographs, formatted in single and double-page layouts, this volume documents Madame Carven’s journey as a master couturier. Decorated with the signature “Ma Griffe” pattern - striped mint green and crisp white, brimmed with her signature pink gingham, broderie anglaise and fresh Asian cotton, it is a true collector’s piece to be held in awe.
