About

White, Theodore H. The Making of the President 1960. New York: The American Past, 1988. Book of the Month Club edition. Introduction by James Restion with original dust jacket, boards, and slipcase. This Book of the Month Club edition of The Making of the President 1960 written by Theodore H. White. The book was published in conjunction with Atheneum Publishers out of New York. The book was produced as part of the American Past Series, which revised and revived old classics with new illustrations, introductions, and binding. This edition features an introduction by James Restion and has been revised from the original first edition printed in 1961. The book features original publisher’s cloth boards, dust jacket, and slipcase. The Making of the President 1960 details John F. Kennedy’s presidential Campaign in a novel way. Just as television had a massive impact on the election, this book’s dramatization of the election gave people an insight into how presidential campaigns actually worked. Before Theodore White’s book, campaigns were seen as very formal affairs with perfect plans. White’s account of the election not only described the often frantic nature of campaigns, but detailed the candidates with all of their flaws. The romanticized account of the election captured the attention of the public and the press, remaining at the top of the bestseller list for all of 1961. White set the new standard for a dramatized version of press coverage on political campaigns. In 1962, White won the Pulitzer Prize for The Making of the President 1960. The book has been widely influential ever since. Condition: Overall near fine condition. The original blue cloth boards have a gilt embossed facsimile signature of Theodore H. White and a red and gold stamp on the spine featuring the title and author. The binding is tight and the pages are clean. The original blue and red dust jacket is in fine condition with no tears, scratches, or surface wear. The original publisher’s blue cloth slipcase features a gilt eagle. This version of the presidential seal depicts an eagle with a ribbon reading “E Pluribus Unum” and it clutches arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The case is in fine condition with no notable issues except very slight surface wear on the reverse side.
