About the Item
Fleming, Ian. The Man with the Golden Gun. London: Jonathan Cape, 1965. First edition, second state printing. Octavo printing. In the original publisher’s black cloth boards with gilt titles to the spine. In the original publisher’s dust jacket.
This is the first edition of Fleming’s final James Bond novel, The Man with the Golden Gun. The first edition was published by Jonathan Cape, London, in 1965 and had a print run of 82,000 copies. It is presented here in its first edition, second state black cloth boards, with gilt titles to the spine. It retains its original dust jacket, with wrap-around artwork of a gun, flies, and bullets, as designed by Richard Chopping.
Fleming wrote this final Bond adventure while ill and "was only able to work on it for one and a half hours a day" (Black, 75). Because of this, his publisher hired novelist Kingsley Amis to help complete and revise the book. It was published in 1965, the year after the author’s death.
The Man with the Golden Gun tracks 007 as he travels to Fleming’s beloved Jamaica to neutralize the assassin of the book’s title. The book was made into the 1975 film of the same title starring Roger Moore as Bond, with an all-star cast including Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Maud Adams, and Hervé Villachaize.
Ian Fleming (1908–1964) was an intelligence officer, journalist, and creator of the fictional British Secret service agent James Bond. Beginning in 1939 he served as a liaison between the Navy and the other secret services, where he was privy to the highest levels of intelligence and became known for his creativity in planning operations, work that inspired his later novels.
After the war, Fleming became a journalist and in 1953 published his first James Bond novel, Casino Royale. It was a success, and Fleming wrote a new Bond book each year until his untimely death in 1964.
