Palaces of Europe. Secaucas: Chartwell Books, 1978. First edition hardcover with dust jacket, 186 pp. The history and development of palace architecture in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. Houses for the aristocracy originated in Italy and France, for example the palazzos of the Italian Renaissance and the French Renaissance chateau. The chateaux were built with their large and formal parks and were dedicated to the power and authority of the ruling class. The sovereigns were the centre of politics, society and culture and their palaces had to reflect their power, wealth and standing.
