Paris 1919 - 1929 Art and Culture, French Book by Vincent Bouvet, 2009

About the Item

Paris 1919 - 1929 Art, Vie et Culture (art, life, and culture), French book by Vincent Bouvet et Gérad Durozoi, 2009. Paris was an international melting pot of arts and letters during the inter-war period. Between the parade of the Allies in 1919 and the one of the Germans in 1940 on the same Champs-Elysées, Paris experienced a fruitful cultural and intellectual period for 20 years, open to the avant-garde and faithful to the best of tradition. In the period between the two World Wars, France maintained its status as a significant economic, military, and colonial power. The fame of French culture is centralized in Paris, from which ideas and fashions radiate. Artists and creators come from all continents to the City of Light to draw their inspiration and gain recognition in the eyes of the world. During the "Roaring Twenties" that followed the euphoria of victory, Paris shone with a thousand lights. The "Lost Generation," the one of Hemingway and Fitzgerald, is the most significant foreign colonies that animate the nights of Paris who discovers jazz. But the bohemian lifestyle of Montparnasse attracts painters and sculptors from the four corners of the globe, such as Chagall, Giacometti, Miro, and Calder, to the studios, cafés, and bars, such as La Coupole. A chameleon genius, Picasso simultaneously experimented with all the paths, including those of nascent surrealism. Matisse, Léger open academies. The School of Paris brought together painters as varied as Soutine, Derain, Van Dongen, and Foujita. Abstract art set up its world headquarters in the city, with the stay of Mondrian, the arrival of Kandinsky, and the creation of movements such as Abstraction-Creation. Haute couture confirmed its supremacy with the Houses of Chanel, Vionnet, Lanvin, and Schiaparelli. The craftsmen of luxury, like Ruhlmann, captivate their clients with the luxury of their creations, known as "Art Deco." Intellectual life is in full swing, punctuated by quarrels between Dada and Surrealist groups, ideological struggles, differences between literary schools, and opposition between theatrical genres. Gide and Valery appear as tutelary and universal figures, while the generation of Mauriac and Malraux, among others, refine novels and essays distributed throughout the world. The crisis of 1929 and the rise of authoritarian regimes darkened Europe's skies. Although Paris remains a vibrant hub for culture and intellect, it has lost its sense of carefree attitude. In the domain of art and architecture, there was a shift towards order that reflected the uncertainty and violence of this period, which saw works like Picasso's Guernica (1937). Political instability and the emergence of the Popular Front resulted in riots, demonstrations, and parades, which regularly rocked the city. Monuments built on the occasion of universal exhibitions, such as the Palais de Chaillot in 1937, inscribe their monumentality in the urban fabric and preserve the memory of pre-war Paris as the films of René Clair or the photographs of Kertesz, Brassaï, or Thérèse Bonney have frozen for eternity. This is a beautiful coffee table art book. Features: Title: Paris 1919 - 1929 Art, Vie et Culture. Author: Vincent Bouvet and Gerard Durozoi. Hardcover book with dust jacket. Language: French. We say retro for the fiftieth anniversary of the Decorative Arts. OK, go retro! Joséphine Baker, Charlot, la Violettera, bell bottoms, the threepenny franc, and Valentino reappear in our mythology. Einstein's surrealism, Picasso the Augustus and Cocteau the White Clown, Stravinsky, and Freud have not left her. With the lamé shirt...

L'Architecture des Années 30 a Paris (1930s Architecture in Paris), French book by Jean-Marc Larbodiere. Moscow and St. Petersburg 1900–1920 Art, Life, and Culture of the Russian Silver Age By: John E. Bowlt The twilight of Imperial Russia witnessed a sudden renaissance of the visual, literary, and performing arts, alongside the more exuberant pomp and circumstance of the court and high society. Here was a Silver Age, as it is known in Russia. Much of this new energy was indebted to the movement known as Symbolism, which fell on fertile soil in Mother Russia. Seeking to transcend the conventional barriers of bourgeois civility, the Russian Symbolists lived and created on the edge, which often earned them the sobriquet of Decadent or Degenerate. But, as Sergei Diaghilev declared, theirs was not a moral or artistic decline, but a voyage of inner discovery and a refurbishing of a national culture. Some of the individuals and institutions associated with the Russian Silver Age are well known—Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, the painting and decoration of Alexandre Benois, Leon Bakst, and Mikhail Vrubel...
