Sotheby's sale 8th March 2005 London. This covers Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modernist lots. There are many photographs of the items throughout the catalogue., with 257 lots. When the British founded the Arts and Crafts movement in the 1860's, one of the founders' goals was to persuade the public to give the decorative arts the same due as fine arts. They may not have totally succeeded but such efforts continue. "I think the creations of major 20th-century architects are at the same artistic and cultural level as works by Picasso, though there is a total lack of proportion in the prices their designs fetch compared with modern paintings," Torsten Bröhan, an authority on modern design, said in an interview by phone from Germany. "Prices always reflect society's knowledge and appreciation. It's harder for the public to learn about the pioneers of design. I see the need to increase this knowledge." Mr. Bröhan, 56, a former dealer in 20th-century decorative arts, is selling his collection of 20th-century design at Sotheby's in London on Tuesday. He said he was trying to raise money for the Bröhan Design Foundation "to establish an online archive of 20th- and 21st-century design and promote innovation in contemporary design." The sale is expected to raise about $1.5 million. This is the third modern-design collection Mr. Bröhan has auctioned at Sotheby's. The 260 lots include furniture, glass, silver, porcelain and jewelry by important 20th-century designers, including Peter Behrens, Walter Gropius, Josef Hoffmann, Henry van de Velde, Wilhelm Wagenfeld and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. 191 pages. 750 grams.
