Richard Parkes Bonington 'On the Pleasure of Painting' by Patrick Noon. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1991. First edition hardcover with dust jacket. 315 pp. A large book on the British artist Richard Parkes Bonington for an exhibition by the same name. The exhibition appeared at the Yale Center for British Art and in Paris at the Musée du Petit Palais from 1991-1992. Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828) was an English Romantic landscape painter, who moved to France at the age of 14 bringing aspects of English style to France. He was one of the most influential British artists of his time, his style was inspired by the old masters, yet was entirely modern in its application. The book discusses his short life and work, focusing on the important role he played in the Romantic movement.
