8vo, 7 1/2 x 5 5/8 inches (190 x 140 mm); 219. [4 publisher ads]. Publisher's navy blue cloth with gilt title on cover and spine in excellent state, housed in a custom green cloth chemise, one flap detached, and 1/2 green morocco slipcase with raised bands, gilt title and coat of arms on compartments; spine faded to brown as typical with green leather. Red leather and gilt bookplate of Louis Auchincloss pasted inside front cover. Pages clean and unmarked, evenly toned, binding square.
Sir Henry MacMillan Beerbohm (1872 – 1956) is known as one of the leading critics, caricaturists, and writers of his day and was the drama critic for the Saturday Review from 1898 until 1910. This book is the first edition in the primary binding of dark blue cloth. It includes the author's most celebrated story "Enoch Soames," the tale of a poet who makes a deal with the Devil to find out how posterity will remember him.
