Val-Dieu Apocalypse - One-Time Only Limited-Edition Facsimiles

About the Item

This is a unique facsimile reproduction limited to 987 copies of a medieval manuscript, the Apocalypse Val-Dieu, owned by the British Library, made by combining the highest technology with the mastery of the craftsmen bookbinders who have handmade its binding using only 100% full grain naturally tanned leather. The manuscript, produced in Normandy, includes the Apocalypse text (in both Latin and French) beneath large and refined half-page miniatures. The Val-Dieu Apocalypse is remarkable firstly on account of its excellent condition and the fine palette used for its illustrations. On a chromatic level, the images stand out for their extreme sophistication and the richness of their hues. Historically, the manuscript belongs to a small group of four Apocalypses of extraordinary quality; produced between 1320 and 1335 in Normandy, their iconographic cycle follows that of thirteenth-century English Apocalypses such as the Metz, Lambeth and Gulbenkian Apocalypses. This small group distinguishes itself from its English model by presenting an innovative conception of the figures and scenes: the realism and tangibility of the figures provide great precision in the fantastic scenes of the Apocalypse. The British Library´s manuscript is the only one of the four which includes the French translation. This Apocalypse also stands out from the rest due to its painstaking artistic execution, its decorative diapered grounds and particularly elegant realism in the portrait of the figures. These qualities are reinforced by remarkable, delicate chromatics, which are combined with a keen sense of aesthetics. The manuscript belonged to the library of the Val-Dieu Charterhouse (Séez diocese) in the 17th century. The first folio bears the inscription Ex Libris Cartusiae Vallis Dei. It was purchased by the British Museum on the 6th May 1848 from Thomas Rodd – an English librarian, antiquarian and Hispanist.

  • Dioscorides of Cibo and Mattioli - One-Time Only Limited-Edition Facsimile
    Located in BARCELONA, ES
This is a one-time only facsimile edition limited to 987 copies of the Dioscorides of Cibo and Mattioli made during the 16th century. We created it by combining the highest technology with the mastery of the bookbinders who have handmade its binding by hand using only 100% full grain naturally tanned leather. In this remarkable codex, the artistic genius and botanist Gherardo Cibo (1512-1600) compiled a selection of medical and botanical texts from the Discorsi by the famous physician of Siena Pietro Andrea Mattioli (1501-1577), and illustrated them with more than 160 remarkable pictures of plants and landscapes that rank amongst the most beautiful of the Renaissance. Discorsi is Mattioli’s Italian translation of Dioscorides’ De Materia Medica (1st century AD) with the addition of lengthy commentaries based on his personal experience and on popular and learned medicine. Gherardo Cibo was an avid reader and admirer of this book by Mattioli. He copied entire passages in neat script, adding his own comments, anecdotes and legends and, more importantly, illustrated them with delicate and lifelike botanical images...
